Tobin Rothlein (MFAST ’13) is the co-founder and producing artistic director of Miller Rothlein (MIRO), a company based in Philadelphia that explores the collaborative intersections of contemporary dance, video, and visual art. Their most recent production is entitled From the Spot Where We/You/I Stand (Stood), and it was described in a review by the Philadelphia Inquirer as “the most fascinating hours you’re likely to spend in a theater this year.”
According to Rothlein on the MIRO website:
“I have been very focused on questioning the function of performance. Can it exist beyond passive contemplation, challenging its relationship to the spectator? Can performance take the spectator out of the dark and into a unique place of presence and responsibility? With From the Spot… I invite you to to enter, to open yourself to the work and see where it leads you. Find your vantage point, look where you are interested, allow yourself to make good decisions and don’t forget, it’s ok to play. We all arrive, and at some point we depart. What happens in between is a series of choices. Have fun…If you want.”

“It begins with the performers – four superb, professional adult dancers, plus a quartet of extremely talented fourth-graders from the Miller Rothlein outreach program at Girard College – standing like living statues atop pedestals of varying heights made from stacks of egg flats, those gray cardboard squares with ovoid indentations.”
“The adult dancers interact with audience members, resting a hand on a shoulder. They then interact with each other, leaning impossibly far forward, to touch foreheads or intertwine necks… It never becomes rowdy, but it is tender, funny, acrobatic, surprisingly evocative…”
